Work as a Community
When working towards sustainable urban planning it is important that work is done not only on an individual level, but on a community level as well. Why is community so important? When we work as a community our voices are amplified, we hear from diverse voices, and we are able to better communicate our needs and the needs of others. As community members we possess unique knowledge about the areas we live in, this insight can be incredibly helpful for city planners and committees.
As an Individual
Community is important, but there are a number of things we can do at an individual level to promote sustainability and climate justice within our cities. It is important to remember that sustainability looks different for everyone, not all people can afford organic locally grown produce or to put solar panels on their homes. The most important step any individual can take towards becoming sustainable is to learn! Learn about your personal carbon emissions, learn what your city or community is doing to mitigate climate change and how you can get involved, learn about the climate crisis, and remember, as you learn share this information with others, if you do not have a community, create one.
Here are some affordable sustainable practices you can incorporate into your daily life:
- Recycle properly: learn what can be recycled in a curbside bin vs. what needs to go to a collection site. Learn about recycling
- Compost food scraps: not only can this create great nourishing fertilizer for plants, but is also reduces food waste and solid waste being sent to landfills. Learn about composting
- Use reusable bags and containers
- Turn off electronics when not in use
- Switch to LED bulbs
- Take shorter showers
Talk to Your Local Government Officials
Start local, talk to your district representatives about community needs and ideas/projects you believe can make Worcester a more sustainable place. Showing up to council meetings can raise awareness about sustainability issues and advocate the importance of community involvement. Vote for politicians who support sustainable urban designs, vote for people and policies that support sustainable urban planning goals, such as green building standards, urban green initiatives, and mixed-use zoning. Make your voice and the voices of others heard by the individuals who make choices for the city and are heavily involved in the city planning process.
